BUSSHO-E

Date: April 8th

Bussho-e 1

A ceremony is held from 9:00 at the main hall of KONGOBUJI, the headquarters temple.

BUSSHO-E is a Buddhist service to celebrate Sakyamuni's birthday, on April 8th every year, at the main hall of Kongobuji. In the service, following the old tradition, the life story of Sakyamuni is chanted with all the abbots in Koyasan participating. The ceremony concludes by pouring AMACHA, the sweet tea over the statue of Sakyamuni.

BUSSHO-E is also known as "Flower Festival." In Koyasan, the "HANAMIDO", which is the small altar that enshrines Sakyamuni as a child, is made of cedar leaves and is located in the main hall of Kongobuji.

AMACHA is also offered to visitors by mothers and wives at the temples in Koyasan.
