Annual Events and Ceremonies

Since Koyasan was founded by Kobo Daishi, various kinds of rituals have been held in Koyasan.

They have been repeated, updated, modified, re-invented year after year, but still today, more than twenty Buddhist ceremonies and festivals are solemnly held.

Here are 10 of those events in which visitors are most welcome to observe and participate relatively without constraint.

  1. MIE-KU ritual

    Date: March 21 on the lunar calendar

  2. BUSSHO-E

    Date: April 8th

  3. TEIGI DAI-MANDALA-KU

    Date: April 10th

  4. OKUNOIN MANDO-E

    Date: April 21st, 9:00 am

  5. Kechien Kanjo Taizokai

    Date: May 3rd to 5th

  6. SANNO-IN RISSEI

    Date: May 3rd on the lunar calendar

  7. SHUSO-GOUTAN-E or The Aoba Festival,
    Commemoration of Kukai(Kobo Daishi)'s Birthday

    Date: June 15th

  8. MANDOKUYO-E, Candle Festival

    Date: August 13th

  9. Kechien Kanjo Kongokai

    Date: October 1st to 3rd
