Reihokan Museum (霊宝館)

Throughout the long and rich history of Koyasan, numerous treasures have been created, donated and preserved in this historic community. The Reihokan Museum was built in 1921 to prevent such cultural assets from being damaged and to establish a central place for them to be viewed by the public. A few hundred of the thousands of art works in the collection have been registered as cultural assets or national treasures and this number is increasing every year. It is said that this museum possesses about 8% of all the certified national treasures in Japan.
Although there are too many works of art to showcase at one time, about 200 of them are always on display as a part of the regular exhibit. Throughout the year there are also special exhibitions in which some of the other rare art works can be viewed for a limited time.
