Shakyo (写経) / Hand copying sutra
Making a handwritten copy of a sutra is called ‘Shakyo’ and it is a very common practice in Japan. Among the multitude of sutras in Buddhism, the Heart Sutra is one of the most popular. The Heart Sutra contains only fourteen lines and it is short, simple and concise. Similar to the practice of chanting, copying a sutra is a form of meditation and has the ability to bring the practitioner peace of mind.
